art and architecture
montessori international

Good scientists and good artists have a common characteristic, they are very good observers. At Zaragoza SchoolHouse we work so that students learn to observe, educate attention and focus on small details. As good scientists and artists, our students observe the environment around them and through different techniques they represent it.

Montessori Art in Zaragoza SchoolHouse

In Montessori drawing lessons and painting we focus on accurate observation and representation of both nature in our garden and real life work: we encourage observation of the physical world in detail. Drawing lessons include technical exercises such as: measuring, dividing, estimating, shapes, shading, shape modifications, drawing and color techniques including wax pastels, graphite, watercolor, among others. It is with the basis of technique and observation that we will be able to create personal and expressive work.

Elementary and Middle School students create work that can range from reality to abstraction; inspired by historical or contemporary artists and art movements that we learn about through stories or lessons. Throughout the creative process, the student will work with creative problem solving and decision making that will play an important role in their ability to consider their ideas through visual media. Valuing their own work will serve as a means to develop critical thinking skills and better understand the meaning of their work.

Zaragoza SchoolHouse follows a Fine Arts program and rotates between the following areas throughout the year: painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, textiles and mixed media. We also encourage a wide range of material use (such as cardboard, sheet metal, wire) and explore the possibilities and limits of the material, examining its firmness, looseness and elasticity; extensibility and compressibility; folding and bending; and economy of use. With them we try to develop an understanding and feeling for space, volume, dimension; for balance, static and dynamic; for positive and active forms, for negative and passive forms. We will see comparisons of various examples in architecture, sculpture, painting, which will help to clarify conceptions of proportion, function and composition, as well as those of construction and combination. In short, the use of a wide range of materials is an exploration of the whole field of construction and constructive thinking in general.

Montessori architecture and geometry in Zaragoza SchoolHouse

The Zaragoza SchoolHouse teaching team's background in architecture has allowed us to implement a unique program in the study of geometry and mathematics.

Throughout the course, ZSH students learn the geometric principles and underlying mathematics in nature, such as seashells and their relationship to the golden number. Theoretical lessons are combined with practical sessions where with paper, plaster, metal or wood students make large geometric structures.

Art and architecture tours and visits

At the primary and secondary school stage, it is common to go on excursions and visits to exhibitions and buildings.

In the last course we visited the Mudejar architecture of Aragón in Tobed and Montalbán, as well as historic towns such as Sigüenza.

At the secondary school stage, we extended the number of visits to include Madrid and Barcelona, with emblematic museums such as the Prado Museum or the Sagrada Familia.
